STEM education is a movement to teach students how science, technology, engineering and mathematics can be used collaboratively to solve real world problems in a non-traditional classroom environment. Students are generally presented with challenges that are project and team based. The engineering principles of brainstorm, design, implement, and test in iterations are the norm and not the exception. Students are encouraged to be inventers and innovators.
Through funding from the Home and School Association, the school was gifted 10 Lego Mindstorm EV3 robot kits this past school year. Coding of the robots was added to the 7th and 8th grade computer science curriculum. Coding was also added to the curriculum in the middle and elementary grades. Through a grant from the archdiocese Little Bit circuit kits and other STEM materials were purchased as well. In addition, the faculty is attending several STEM education training sessions.
The Home and School Association has generously approved monies for furnishing and stocking a STEM Room that will be available for all classes beginning this fall. The purpose of the STEM Room will be to provide the non-traditional classroom environment where projects can be worked and perfected. The space will be similar to the Makerspaces you may have seen at the Science Center or Magic House.
At this time, we asking for everyone to keep the STEM Room in mind as you go to garage sales or are cleaning out your house. We will gladly accept any tools you may have and craft items. We are also looking for your time and talents. We will be hosting a Work Day Aug 6th to put together furniture, organize any donations, and decorate. Please see list of items in the bulletin that are needed. If you come across any of these over the summer, please contact one of us so we can arrange to receive it or it can be dropped off at school after Aug 1. If you would like to help on Aug 6, please let one of us know. We welcome questions, advice, ideas, and assistance. Please FastDirect, email, or call.
