A note from our Parish Nurse, Retha Lear:
The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. On September 3rd our church will be blessed by being able to support the Red Cross in its efforts to supply blood products to those in need of them.
Currently the Red Cross supplies more than 40% of the blood and blood products needed in the United States. And that’s a good thing, because every 2 seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. Approximately 38% of the population is eligible to donate blood, but less than 10% of that population do. Will you be a part of that 3% this year?
Consider donating this year to help the many recipients of these blood products, persons with sickle cell disease, cancer, anemia, or injuries suffered in automobile accidents. A single car accident victim may require as many as 100 pints of blood.
Blood donation is a simple four-step process including registration, a medical history with a mini-physical, the actual blood donation itself (usually lasting 10-12 minutes), and then refreshments. Roughly one pint of blood is given during a donation.
The Red Cross started as a desire to assist the wounded on the battlefield, and it continues to support the armed services and their families. The American Red Cross was founded in the United States by Clara Barton in 1881 and provides disaster assistance during times of natural disasters such as the flooding happening now in Louisiana.
